My Stay in UI - Regan Buck Bardeen

I am a doctoral candidate in African History at the University of California, Los Angeles. As a Fulbright scholar at the University of Ibadan, I am conducting research on the development of a reading public in southwestern Nigeria, between 1920 and 1980. I am especially interested in the ways people accessed and utilized books outside of formal education settings. UI is a wonderful place to be based for research; I spend a great deal of time at the National Archives, located on campus, or in Kenneth Dike Library. I also conduct interviews with publishers and booksellers throughout the city. I love traveling in the region and can't wait to see more of Nigeria in the coming months. When I'm at home in the Staff Quarters, I enjoy learning how to cook Nigerian food - especially my favorite meal, eba with egusi.

Fulbright Scholars on Campus

There are two Fulbright scholars on Campus . They are Regan BuckBardeen and Matthew H. Brown. Regan BuckBardeen is a doctoral Candidate from the Department of History, University of California, Los Angeles her research focus in UI is on Archival Materials.

Matthew Brown is a Doctoral Candidate from the University of Wisconsin- Madison, working on his PhD. Thesis on Nigerian Video films. He arrived in UI on 7 February, 2010. He will be in UI for a year.

Fulbright Workshop

There will be a workshop on Applying for Fulbright Scholarship Programmes.

ARCIS Receives MacArthur Foundation Grant

African Regional Centre for Information Science (ARCIS), University of Ibadan, has received a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to strengthen staff and infrastructural Capacity through a collaboration between University of Ibadan and the Faculty of Information and Media Studies, University of Western Ontario, Canada. The major components of the grant are:

• Junior Academic Staff exchange for six months for training and research.
• Senior Academic Staff exchange (Snr Lecturers and above)- The exchange involves the scholars spending 3 months abroad while the scholars in the University of Western Ontario will come to Nigeria for 3 months.
• Upgrading the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure at ARCIS. The book and journal facilities of the ARCIS library will be improved.
• Development of the curriculum of a proposed undergraduate programme in Information Science, to be delivered online through the distance learning centre.

Students from Rutgers

Nicholas Greene and Sayed Abbas from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, visited the University of Ibadan from 19 July to 21 August, 2009. They came to do a research on potential Nigerian vegetables for commercial development in New Jersey. They plan to return next summer to complete the second half of their internship. Cocktail for International Visitors

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. O.A. Bamiro had a cocktail on Friday, 29 January, 2010 in honour of visitors from the International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research. The visitors are: Prof. Kikkeri Naresh of the Department of Histopathology, Hammersmith Hospital and Imperial College London, Professor Lorenzo Leoncini of the Department of Human Pathology and Oncology, University of Siena, Italy, Prof. Dr. Udo Bode, a Professor of Paediatrics and Oncology from the University of Bonn and Dr. Nina Hurwitz, the Director of the International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research, University of Basel. They were hosted by Prof. Yetunde Aken'ova of the Department of Haematology, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan.
