Five College Women's Studies Research Centre Calls For Applications

The Centre invites applications for its RESEARCH ASSOCIATESHIPS for 2011-2012 from scholars and teachers at all levels of the educational system, as well as from artists, community organizers and political activists, both local and international. Associates are provided with offices in our spacious facility, faculty library privileges, and the collegiality of a diverse community of feminists. Research Associate applications are accepted for either a semester or the academic year and also accept about 15-18 Research Associates per year.

The Five College Women’s Studies Research Centre was founded in 1991 as a site for scholarly activity on issues relating to women and gender. Located in the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, it is supported by a consortium of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The five institutions have a thirty-five year history of cooperation and innovation in higher education and boast of one of the largest concentrations of women’s studies scholars anywhere in the world. The Centre supports projects in all disciplines so long as they focus centrally on women or gender.
Research Associateships do not provide a stipend.

PRE/POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES IN ETHIOPIA

The Hubert Department of Global Health (HGH), Rollins School of Public Health (RSPH) and Emory University announce fellowships for pre or post-doctoral trainees mainly in the fields of Health science(medicine, public health or Nursing), Anthropology and Mathematics/ computational Science (Geographical Information Mathematics/Computational Science/Geographical Information Systems or Bioinformatics/Biostatistics).
It is a full-time, residential fellowship for a period of one year (6 months of fieldwork in Ethiopia and 3months at Emory).

Eligibility
· Applicants must have an M.D., Ph.D. or be Ph.D candidates in good standing in the Health sciences, mathematics and computational science, informatics, anthropology, sociology or economics.

· Must possess excellent skills in quantitative,qualitative research and writing, as well as a demonstrated interest in and understanding of issues in global health research in Ethiopia.

Successful candidates will participate actively in multidisciplinary teams, working across disciplinary boundaries with which the person may be unfamiliar for addressing substantive concerns in Global Health and the matching of an applicant’s research interests with those of the ongoing projects in Ethiopia and faculty members who will serve as mentors. The various projects are:

- Water, Women and Development in Ethiopia
- Maternal and Neonatal Health in Ethiopia Partnership
- Improving Maternal Health
- Improving maternal, neonatal and child health outcomes through better designed nutrition policies and programs.

US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announces Graduate and Undergraduate Fellowships.

STAR FELLOWSHIPS

EPA’s Science to Achieve Results (STAR) graduate fellowship program supports Master’s and Doctoral candidates in environmental studies. Each year, students in the United States compete for STAR fellowships through a rigorous review process. Students can pursue degrees in traditionally recognized environmental disciplines as well as other fields such as social anthropology, urban and regional planning, and decision sciences. Since the program began in 1995, EPA has awarded approximately 1,500 STAR fellowships to students in every state and most territories. Fellowships have helped educate new academic researchers, government scientists, science teachers, and, environmental engineers.

Benefits of an EPA STAR Fellowship includes: Up to $42,000 per year of support, including $12,000 per year for tuition and fees, $25,000 per year in a monthly stipend, and an annual expense allowance of $5,000. Master’s level students can receive support for a maximum of two years. Doctoral students can be supported for a maximum of three years with funding available, under certain circumstances, over a period of four years.

GRO UNDERGRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is offering Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) Undergraduate Fellowships for bachelor level students in environmentally related fields of study: Natural and Life Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Interdisciplinary Programs, Engineering, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science.

Eligible students will receive financial support in their last two years of undergraduate study (current sophomores apply) and for an internship at an EPA facility during the summer between their junior and senior years. The students must attend a GRO eligible institution (<$35M in Research and Development). The fellowship provides up to $19,700 ($10,000 for tuition and fees, $7,200/yr stipend, $2,500-expense allowance) per year of academic support and up to $9,500 of internship support for the three-month summer period, for a total of up to $48,900 for the two year period. Professor Brian Robertson Visits the University of Ibadan

Professor Brian Robertson, the Associate Director of International Programmes at the Heriot Watt University, paid a courtesy visit to the University of Ibadan on Thursday, 28 October, 2010. He was received at the Vice Chancellor’s office by Professor E.A. Bamgboye, the Deputy Vice- Chancellor (Administration), Professor Adigun Agbaje, the Deputy Vice- Chancellor (Academic) and Mrs Omotayo Ikotun, the University Registrar. The purpose of his visit was to work out the modalities involved in establishing a Partnership with the Department of Petroleum Engineering and the Energy Sector.
Professor Adigun Agbaje talked about the number of MOUs, collaboration and grants received by the University, stating that the University had a strong international profile and was capable of managing partnerships successfully.

UI hosted Fulbright Scholars and Yoruba flagship programme students.

The University of Ibadan on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 had a welcome cocktail for a visiting professor, Fulbright scholars and students of the Yoruba Flagship Programme who recently arrived at the University.

They are: Professor Ishola Ajiferuke, a Professor of Information Science at the University of Western Ontario, Canada, who is a visiting Professor at the ARCIS.
Prof. Esther Ofulue, University of Wisconsin, who’s a Fulbright scholar at the Department of Biochemistry, and Dr Glenn Odom, Rowan University, NJ who also is a Fulbright scholar at the Department of Theatre Arts, UI and the students of the Yoruba flagship programme.

At the event, Prof Kola Owolabi talked about the uniqueness of the Yoruba Language Programme of the flagship Centre for Yoruba as a Foreign language. He applauded the five students from the University of Wisconsin for taking the initiative to come to UI. Present at the occasion were The University Libarian Dr. B. The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the United Kingdom invites eligible candidates to apply for the 2011/2012 Commonwealth fellowships. These awards help individuals to pursue advanced academic study in other Commonwealth countries and consequently allow them to make significant contributions to their home countries when they return. These fellowships are available to academic staff in all disciplines.

Eligibility

To apply for these awards, candidates should:
i) Be Commonwealth citizens, refugees, or British protected persons
ii) Be permanently resident in a developing Commonwealth country
iii) Be available to commence their Fellowships in the United Kingdom on 1October, 2011. Any other start date will only be permitted in exceptional cases.

University of Ibadan Honours Winner of the 2010 Commonwealth Regional Prize In Literature.

Notable for producing people of distinction, the University of Ibadan on Thursday, 15 July, 2010 hosted Miss Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani, winner of the 2010 Commonwealth Regional Prize in Literature at an event organized by the Department of English in honour of a distinguished alumna.


Miss Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani, who started writing at the age of 13, obtained a bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1998. Her novel ‘I DO NOT COME TO YOU BY CHANCE’ has won a Betty Trask award, the Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best First Book in Africa, and was a Finalist for the Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa. The book was also named one of the Best Books of 2009 in Washington, USA.


The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Adigun Agbaje who chaired the event stated that the University is proud of Adaobi for all she has accomplished and that the University will continue to produce great men and women in the literary field. Also in attendance were Prof P.A. Ogundeji Dean of Arts, Prof Helen Osinowo, HOD of Psychology, Dr Remi Raji-Oyelade, HOD of English, Dr. Bola Udegbe Director, Office of International Programmes and a host of others.

Professor Ukeje visits University of Ibadan

A Professor of Elementary and Early Childhood Education at the Kennesaw State University(KSU), Professor Ikechukwu Ukeje visited the University of Ibadan on 13th May, 2010. Prof. Ukeje's trip to UI was a follow-up on the collaboration between Kenessaw State University and the University of Ibadan on the possibility of making the latter, a regional anchor University for KSU research and educational activities with other institutions in West Africa.

The Coordinator of African Universities under the Institute for Global Initiative of the KSU, Prof. Ukeje also met with the DVC(Academic), Prof. Adigun Agbaje and the MacArthur Grant Liaison Officer, Prof.G.O.S. Ekhaguere and was pleased to know that the Office of International Programmes has been established.

African Network For Internationalization Of Education: Call for proposals

The African Network for Internationalization of Education (ANIE) invites research proposals from young scholars addressing the largely unexplored field of internationalization of higher education in Africa and its role in enhancing the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Interested researchers are required to develop research proposals to explore how internationalization of higher education could contribute towards the achievement of any of the four selected MDGs namely:

a) Global partnership for development
b) Universal Basic (Primary) Education
c) Promote gender equality and empowerment of women
d) Combat HIV& AIDS, malaria and other diseases
e) Other MDG(s) or relevant theme(s) can be addressed but only in addition to any of the above themes

Applicants should be young African researchers who have completed their first degree or equivalent professional training, with proven capacity to carry out research on the theme of this call. Those who are currently enrolled for post graduate degrees with evidence of successful research output are encouraged to apply. The successful candidates will be required to be registered as ANIE members.

Proposals should not be more than 2000 words and should demonstrate sound academic style and quality. Higher consideration will be given to collaborative and cross disciplinary research teams, multidisciplinarity, sensitivity to gender issues and development of young scholars. Proposals from a group of researchers doing a comparative research across different countries are particularly encouraged. In addition, the proposals should fulfill the following requirements;

1) Should address how internationalization of higher education will support the achievement of the chosen theme or goal of the research initiative.
2) Should address how internationalization of higher education will support the achievement of the chosen theme or goal of the research initiative.
3) Should underline the use of evidence-based or empirical research.

The proposals should include a background statement, problem statement, aims and objectives, a conceptual framework, methodology, work plan, a budget, and one page resume. ANIE will publish and disseminate the research outcomes and the authors are required not to publish the papers in any other media before the release of the ANIE publication. The deadline for submission of proposals is 30 August, 2010.

Visiting Fellowships in Human Rights - Call for Applications

Applications are invited for Visiting Fellowships in Human Rights, hosted by the
Human Rights Consortium at the School of Advanced Study, University of London.

Visiting Fellowships in Human Rights are granted for a period ranging from one
to six months. Fellows are expected to help develop the activities of the Human
Rights Consortium at the School by presenting at a conference or seminar or
contributing to a publication, and to pursue their own research. Office space,
access to computing and printing facilities and a library card are provided.

An honorarium of up to £2,000 is offered to one Visiting Fellow in Human Rights
each year. Non-stipendiary fellowships may also be offered, subject to space availability.

Deadline for submission of application is 30 September 2010 for a visit in 2011. Prospective applicants are encouraged to apply at least six months before their proposed visit.

* Early career postdoctoral fellowships in Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania,
Uganda, and South Africa

* Dissertation completion fellowships in Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, and
Uganda (there are no dissertation fellowships in South Africa)

Both fellowships provide one year of support for research and writing to
scholars based on the continent and affiliated with institutions of higher learning
in Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, and South Africa. Scholars working in any
humanistic discipline normally supported by the ACLS are encouraged to apply.
In addition to one year of stipend support, each ACLS AHP fellow is also eligible to
apply for a three-month residency as a visiting scholar at one of several select
institutions for advanced research on the continent.

ACLS African Humanities Program in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda Announces Fellowship Awards

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) has announced 39 fellowship awards to African scholars in the second year (2010) of its African Humanities Program (AHP), a multi-year initiative of the international competitions funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

In a bid to advance the humanities as a core component of higher education and research in Africa, the AHP provides two fellowship competitions to scholars from Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria. One program promotes the completion of PhD dissertations in humanities by providing stipends to support the final year of writing. The second fellowship competition supports on-going research and publication of early career researchers by providing one year leaves from teaching in the form of postdoctoral fellowships. Out of the 39 fellowships awarded to Africans, 23 of the awardees are Nigerians and 7 of the Nigerians are from the University of Ibadan.

In addition to providing fellowships, the program organizes public meetings in the above mentioned countries for discussions of new intellectual directions and standards of quality in humanities scholarships. One of such meetings was held at the University of Ibadan from 21 to 23 June, 2010 with participants from across Nigeria and other countries.

The ACLS defines the humanities as the investigation of human cultures, languages, and histories through qualitative approaches in disciplines such as anthropology, history, literature, religion, philosophy and studies of the fine and performing arts.

2011-2012 EURIAS FELLOWSHIP CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

The European Institutes for Advanced Study (EURIAS) Fellowship Programme is an international researcher mobility programme offering 33 fellowships for the 2011-2012 academic year. It proposes 10-month residencies in one of the 14 participating Institutes: Berlin, Bologna, Brussels, Bucharest, Budapest, Cambridge, Helsinki, Jerusalem, Lyons, Nantes, Paris, Uppsala, Vienna and Wassenaar.

EURIAS Fellowships are mainly offered in the fields of the humanities and social sciences but may also be granted to scholars in natural and exact sciences whose proposed research projects do not require laboratory facilities.

The Programme welcomes applications worldwide from promising young scholars as well as from established senior researchers. During their fellowship, EURIAS fellows benefit from the high-quality research environment and working conditions provided by the host Institute. All Institutes for Advanced Study (IAS) have agreed on common standards, including the provision of a living allowance, accommodation or mobility allowance, a research budget and coverage of travel expenses.
