Visiting Fellowships in Human Rights - Call for Applications

Applications are invited for Visiting Fellowships in Human Rights, hosted by the
Human Rights Consortium at the School of Advanced Study, University of London.

Visiting Fellowships in Human Rights are granted for a period ranging from one
to six months. Fellows are expected to help develop the activities of the Human
Rights Consortium at the School by presenting at a conference or seminar or
contributing to a publication, and to pursue their own research. Office space,
access to computing and printing facilities and a library card are provided.

An honorarium of up to £2,000 is offered to one Visiting Fellow in Human Rights
each year. Non-stipendiary fellowships may also be offered, subject to space availability.

Deadline for submission of application is 30 September 2010 for a visit in 2011. Prospective applicants are encouraged to apply at least six months before their proposed visit.

ACLS Announces 2010-2011 African Humanities Program Fellowship Competition

The African Humanities Program at the American Council of Learned
Societies (ACLS),with financial support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, announces competitions for:

* Early career postdoctoral fellowships in Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania,
Uganda, and South Africa

* Dissertation completion fellowships in Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, and
Uganda (there are no dissertation fellowships in South Africa)

Both fellowships provide one year of support for research and writing to
scholars based on the continent and affiliated with institutions of higher learning
in Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, and South Africa. Scholars working in any
humanistic discipline normally supported by the ACLS are encouraged to apply.
In addition to one year of stipend support, each ACLS AHP fellow is also eligible to
apply for a three-month residency as a visiting scholar at one of several select
institutions for advanced research on the continent.

ACLS African Humanities Program in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda Announces Fellowship Awards

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) has announced 39 fellowship awards to African scholars in the second year (2010) of its African Humanities Program (AHP), a multi-year initiative of the international competitions funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

In a bid to advance the humanities as a core component of higher education and research in Africa, the AHP provides two fellowship competitions to scholars from Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria. One program promotes the completion of PhD dissertations in humanities by providing stipends to support the final year of writing. The second fellowship competition supports on-going research and publication of early career researchers by providing one year leaves from teaching in the form of postdoctoral fellowships. Out of the 39 fellowships awarded to Africans, 23 of the awardees are Nigerians and 7 of the Nigerians are from the University of Ibadan.

In addition to providing fellowships, the program organizes public meetings in the above mentioned countries for discussions of new intellectual directions and standards of quality in humanities scholarships. One of such meetings was held at the University of Ibadan from 21 to 23 June, 2010 with participants from across Nigeria and other countries.

The ACLS defines the humanities as the investigation of human cultures, languages, and histories through qualitative approaches in disciplines such as anthropology, history, literature, religion, philosophy and studies of the fine and performing arts.

2011-2012 EURIAS FELLOWSHIP CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

The European Institutes for Advanced Study (EURIAS) Fellowship Programme is an international researcher mobility programme offering 33 fellowships for the 2011-2012 academic year. It proposes 10-month residencies in one of the 14 participating Institutes: Berlin, Bologna, Brussels, Bucharest, Budapest, Cambridge, Helsinki, Jerusalem, Lyons, Nantes, Paris, Uppsala, Vienna and Wassenaar.

EURIAS Fellowships are mainly offered in the fields of the humanities and social sciences but may also be granted to scholars in natural and exact sciences whose proposed research projects do not require laboratory facilities.

The Programme welcomes applications worldwide from promising young scholars as well as from established senior researchers. During their fellowship, EURIAS fellows benefit from the high-quality research environment and working conditions provided by the host Institute. All Institutes for Advanced Study (IAS) have agreed on common standards, including the provision of a living allowance, accommodation or mobility allowance, a research budget and coverage of travel expenses.

EXTENDED DEADLINE: FULBRIGHT SENIOR SCHOLAR PROGRAM FOR 2011/2012

It is my pleasure to inform you that the deadline for the Fulbright
Senior Scholar Program for the 2011/2012 academic year has been extended
to July 1, 2010. The J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board is
particularly interested in senior lecturers from the social sciences and
humanities. However, all fields are eligible. Please spread the word.



NOTE: All applications including 3 reference letters MUST be submitted
online on or before the new deadline of July 1, 2010.



This program, funded by the Department of State and administered by the
Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), offers senior
faculty members (those with at least 3 years post-doctoral experience)
from universities in Nigeria the opportunity to conduct research at U.S.
institutions for a minimum of three (3) months and a maximum of nine (9)
months. The selection process and the final award of grants are
extremely competitive.



The Fulbright Scholar Program provides two types of grants: the Senior
Research Program, which enables selected candidates to pursue individual
research projects; and the Professional Development Program, which
allows senior faculty members to spend 3 to 5 months at an American
university or college to pursue professional interests and consult with
colleagues in their field. All applicants are required to specify for
which of the two grant categories they wish to be considered. Please
note that awards are also available for 3 to 5 month activities on
program and curriculum development for HIV/AIDS-related topics.
Unfortunately, this program does not provide an opportunity for
lecturing.

To be eligible for a grant, an applicant must be a citizen of Nigeria or
a permanent resident, and should hold a valid passport issued from the
country in which the application is made. In addition, an applicant
must have at least 3 years of post-doctoral degree training or
experience at the time of application.

TR: Africa Conference 2011- Call for Papers

Scholars are invited to submit conference papers and full panal proposals for the 2011 conference on Africa in World Politics. The conference which is scheduled to hold at the University of Texas, Austin from March 25-27, 2011 is to create an interdisciplinary dialogue concerning Africa’s contemporary and historical place in world politics.

As with previous conferences, participants will be drawn from different parts of the world. Papers can also be submitted together as a panel. Submitted papers will be assigned to particular panels according to similarities in theme, topic, discipline, or geographical location. Graduate students are especially encouraged to attend and present papers and will be partnered with a senior scholar to encourage their own growth as scholars.

The deadline for submitting paper proposals is November 30, 2010. Proposals should include a 250-word abstract and title, as well as the author’s name, address, telephone number, email address, and institutional affiliation.

PROFESSOR GATH DALES AND PROFESSOR JOEL FEINSTEIN AT THE UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN

The University of Ibadan on Monday, April 19, 2010 hosted Professor Gath Dales of Mathematics Department, University of Leeds and Professor Joel Feinstein of Nottingham University, United Kingdom who came to Nigeria to participate in the Banach Algebra Workshop at Abuja between April 4 and 8, 2010.
During the visit, the Department of Mathematics enjoyed the benefit having mathematical and recruitment talks with them. Presentations on ‘Frechet Algebras of Power Series’ and on ‘Infinity and Beyond’ given by Prof. Dales and Prof. Feistein respectively, focused on mathematical problems relating to Banach Algebras and their basic applications; and functional continuity of certain operators on Hilbert spaces. Also, the talks afforded the Students the opportunity of being provided with information regarding requirements and conditions for obtaining PhD in Mathematics in Leeds University.
According to Mr.Emeka Egwe who represented the Head of Department, the visit has further broadened the long term collaboration with the University of Leeds and Nottingham University.
Professor Dales, a renowned Mathematician, who is a Council member of London Mathematical Society, was glad to visit the University of Ibadan where his Father-in-law was once a Principal of then University College of Ibadan
